2018 has been a big year for the La Primitiva Spanish lottery for many reasons, one of which came in the form of a huge win in a region of Spain that has been somewhat ignored by the lottery gods over the last few years.
The big win came in the February 24 2018 draw, which took place in Madrid, with the winner hailing from Guitiriz. After purchasing a total of 8 bets over the Thursday and Saturday draws, spending a total of €64, they scooped an impressive prize of more than €8.5 million.
This amount instantly became the biggest ever lottery win in Guitiriz, far surpassing the previous record set way back in 1992. Guitiriz is a small spa town that is never at the forefront of big national news and rarely makes it onto the headlines. It has a population of fewer than 5,500 people, which means that the winner could afford to give each citizen over €1,500 with his winnings.
But while we’re sure this record winner was happy to share his or her joy with the fellow citizens of this small spa town in the north of Spain, we very much doubt they would be interested in sharing their money. And who can blame them, because they now have enough money to buy approximately 110 houses in Guitiriz based on the average market price in the spring of 2018.
It won’t put them on any Spanish rich lists, but it will set them up for life with a comfortable sum. If they were to put that sum in a savings account with a 5% interest rate they would earn approximately half a million Euros a year, which equates to approximately €9,000 in interest per week, or €27,000 per month. To put that into perspective, the average income in Spain is just over €1,300 a month, while even a qualified doctor would expect to earn less than €15,000.
How to Play the La Primitiva
The successful numbers for the aforementioned winner were 43, 45, 4, 12, 27, 5 (main numbers) and 40 and 7 (additional numbers). This lottery works like many other lotteries you will be familiar with, but there are some interesting additions that make it more appealing to fans of raffles and short-odds betting, and your odds of winning this lottery are significantly greater than many other lotteries you will be familiar with.
The tickets can be more expensive though. They cost €1 per “block”, and the more you have (up to 8) the bigger the share of winnings you can expect. A full ticket will set you back a total of €8, which is three times greater than the price of a EuroMillions ticket. But your odds of winning this lottery are more than three times greater. Quite considerably greater, in fact.
Your odds of winning the La Primitiva jackpot are 1 in 13.9 million, which is a tenth of the odds of winning the EuroMillions (1 in 139 million). Your odds of winning other big prizes are even greater, as you have a 1 in 1,000 chance of securing 4 numbers and picking up the fourth tier prize.
